CanMilAir decal set # 007

Ryan Cameron from Langley, British Columbia, sends this amazing photo of a 1:700 Hawker Sea Fury for his  resin HMCS Magnificent, circa 1955.  CanMilAir set # 184 contains a deck-full of Sea Furies (21), Avengers (8) and a single HO4S.

Watch for more photos from Ryan as he completes his Maggie.

CanMilAir Decal set # 037

The two photos above were sent in by Robert Johnson from Wilmot Station, Nova Scotia. Both of these models are 1:18 scale 21st Century Toys, cleaned up of their original American markings and refinished as Canadian aircraft.

The Vought F4U Corsair IV is that of Canada's last Victoria Cross recipient Lt (N) Robert Hampton Gray VC, DSC, MiD, RCNVR from Nelson, BC, who served aboard HMS Formidable with 1841 Sqn until his death on August 9, 1945. Robert used CanMilAir Decal set # 030 for his Corsair.

The second photo shows a mid-1950's P-51D Mustang IV in AB+3 Era markings from the Canadian Joint Air Training Command based in Rivers, Manitoba. For his Mustang, Robert used CanMilAir Decal set # 037.

Nice work, Robert! I especially like the pilots!

CanMilAir Decal set # 183

Using CanMilAir Decal set # 183, Perry Mason from Loretto, Ontario, built this 1:144 scale Lancaster as a Christmas gift for his father-in-law, who lost an uncle (in bold below) when 426 Sqn Lancaster B Mk 2 "OW-T" was shot down by a German night fighter off the coast of the Netherlands on March 23, 1944.  Since there are no Mk 2 kits available in this scale, Perry used the Minicraft version. The major difference being the engines on the Mk 2 were Hercules radials while the kit has Merlin inline engines.

Flight Lieutenant H. H. Bow and crew were all lost.  Flight Lieutenant Bow (Vancouver) had completed ten sorties while the rest of the crew had completed eight.
The other members of the crew were:
Flying Officer C. G. Hetherington (Vancouver)
Wireless Operator: Flight Sergeant J. A. Mullally (New Zealand)
Bomb Aimer: Pilot Officer Alexander M. J. Bell
(Hamilton)
Flight Engineer: Sergeant D. Gilmore (Belfast)
Mid-Upper Gunner: Pilot Officer J. D. Brown (Calgary)
Rear Gunner: Flight Sergeant A. D. Frith (Yorkshire)

This smart looking F-86 Sabre is the 1:144 scale Trumpeter F-86F-30-NA (kit #01320) built by Iain Fraser from Burlington, Ontario. Iain, a Burloak IPMS member, had the following to say about the build:

"I built the kit mostly 'out of the box' with the exception of some adding some additional detail in the cockpit like sidewalls, ejection seat arm rests, harnesses and a gun sight.
I used Gunze and Polyscale acrylics to paint the Sabre and with CanMilAir decal set #003 I have a Canadair Sabre from 434 Sqn in Germany."
Very nice work, Iain! I have same kit in my stash waiting to be built when I find the time!

CanMilAir Decal set # 035

This 1/48 scale Revell B-25J was built by Edward Bates from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Edward filled in the top turret area and left out all the fire power, package guns, etc. He painted it with Testors acrylics and used Canmilair decal set #035 to finish it off.

Nice work, Edward!

CanMilAir Decal set # 194

This beautifully refinished 1:18 scale 21st Century Toys model is from  Robert Johnson of  Wilmot Station, Nova Scotia. To re-create a Golden Hawks Canadair Sabre Mk 6 from the 1963 air show season, Robert used CanMilAir Decal set # 194 over Humbrol Gold and a clear coat. Sitting next to it is the 1:72 scale Corgi Limited Edition die-cast of a Golden Hawks Sabre Mk 5 from the 1959 season to illustrate the size of these models.

CanMilAir Decal set # 106

This RCAF Expeditor was built by Darius Aibara of Worthing, England. While requiring a lot of clean-up work, the 1:48 scale Battle Axe kit builds into a fine looking model. Darius detailed the cockpit and used Halfords spray paints and CanMilAir Decal set # 106 finish off his Bug Smasher.

Great work, Darius!

CanMilAir Decal set # 048

Jay Boutin from Calgary, Alberta sent in this 1:72 scale Academy PBY-5A built up to represent the RAF Coastal Command 162 Sqn Canso flown by F/L David Hornell in 1944. CanMilAir Decal set # 048 provided the markings. A memorial aircraft dedicated to this Victoria Cross recipient in these exact markings is on display at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum.

Lest We Forget

Another Victoria Cross subject, this fine looking 1:18 scale Vought F4U Corsair IV was sent in by Todd Burke from Mississauga Ontario. Flown by Lt (N) Robert Hampton Gray VC, DSC, MiD, RCNVR from Nelson, BC, who served aboard HMS Formidable with 1841 Sqn until his death on August 9, 1945, the same day that the second atomic bomb was dropped on the city of Nagasaki.

Lt Gray was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest award for courage in the British Commonwealth, "... for great valour...brilliant fighting spirit and most inspiring leadership". His citation in the Canadian Aviation Hall of Fame reads: "His winning of the Victoria Cross in aerial combat must be regarded as the most outstanding contribution possible to Canadian aviation."

Gray was the last Canadian to be awarded the Victoria Cross. Almost fifty years later, a granite monument was raised on the shoreline overlooking the Japanese bay which is Gray's last resting place. Donated by the province of British Columbia, the monument is the first in Japan to honor an allied serviceperson.
