CMAD # 117, 118, 119

This 1:72 scale Canadair North Star was built by Scott Hemsley, of  Willowdale, Ontario / Seneca Falls, New York. To achieve an accurate North Star, Scott used  the Rareplanes (vac) fuselage with modified Heller DC-6 wings. The cargo doors were opened and a partial interior scratch built. The Merlin engines are epoxy-resin based on the Rareplanes engines, but greatly enhanced by Dave Askett. The white metal exhausts are from AeroClub, as are the prop spinners, and the props are from an Airfix Lancaster.

The diorama was created by Carl Mills and will be presented to the National Air Force Museum at CFB Trenton for their display for the Korean War.

Hat's off to Scott and Carl. Beautifully done!

CMAD # 095

This 1:7 scale radio controlled T-34A Mentor was built by Les Morgan from Moose Factory, Ontario. It depicts a Mentor from the Central Experimental and Proving Establishment (CEPE) circa 1955. The kit is from E-Flight and originally wore Red and White US Navy markings. In 1:7 scale, this aircraft is 44" long, has a 55" wingspan and a flying weight of just over 5 pounds (2.25 kg)!

Nicely done, Les!!

CMAD # 303

William Lawlor from Penticton, British Columbia, sent in this photo of his 1:32 scale Canadair Sabre, which he re-worked to a create a Mk 5 from 430 Sqn.  The basis for his build was the Kinetic Models F-86F kit.

Will mastered a new vacform canopy and made a new nose with gun troughs, reworked the tail planes, the vertical fin and forward strake, re-scribed the panel lines, vents and hatches. To help support all the weight, he elected to use white metal landing gear.  The tires and rims are modified  Hasegawa parts.  The cockpit contains a scratch-built instrument panel using Eduard bezels. The rest of the cockpit was scratch built using references from Larry Milberry's excellent book "The Canadair Sabre".  William used CanMilAir set # 303, but elected to paint the blue squadron sash on the fin. The stencils from his spares box.

William has posted photos and descriptions of this build on the  Large Scale Planes  website. The attention to detail on this Sabre is astounding! A superb build William!!!

Ron Palmer from Edmonton, Alberta sent in this photo of his 1:32 Grumman Avenger TBM-3E in Royal Canadian Navy markings from the very early 1950's. Still sporting the ball turret and Gloss Sea Blue (ANA 623) paint from its previous owner, the US Navy, these Avengers were used by  VS 881 Sqn aboard HMCS Magnificent.

Bravo Zulu, Ron!

CMAD # 237

Lou Vautour from Kingston, Nova Scotia, sent in this photo showing three of his 1:144 scale McDonnell F2H-3 RCN Banshees from VF 871 Sqn circa 1962. Lou hand carved nine of these little beauties , eight of which await the launching of his 1:144 scale HMCS Bonaventure (still under construction). Here are some of Lou's comments:

"The Banshees are scratch built from pine, basswood and Evergreen tubing. The 1:144th scale drawings I used were supplied to me by Dan Linton after I had to scrap the original seven Banshees I built due to incorrect drawings I found online. Each Banshee comprises 32 separate parts lovingly carved, glued and sanded to produce the finished product. CanMilAir decals for VF-871 were graciously given to me by Bill Burns in exchange for a ninth Banshee. The decals have outstanding clarity and laid down extremely well."

Lou, your Banshee is a welcome addition to my 1:144 Canadian collection and sits proudly on my display cabinet.
Bravo Zulu!

CMAD # 424

Something a little bit different from CanMilAir . . . .  Shown here is a 1:200 scale CargoJet Boeing 727-200 sent in by Warren Ruiter of Caledonia, Ontario.

CargoJet is a fairly new outfit that started operations in Hamilton in 2002, and Warren, a pilot with the company, approached CanMilAir to see if decals could be produced for their aircraft as he wanted to build several of these in 1:200 and 1:144 scales for family, friends and co-workers. Warren proved to be a valuable resource as he willingly photographed and measured various elements to make sure the set was drawn accurately.

Great job, Warren and I will look forward to seeing the larger versions!
