CMAD # 017, 019, 275

Cal Faber of Victoria, British Columbia sent in several group photos of his growing collection of 1:144 scale Canadian military aircraft. I will post more of his photos later, but for now here are two.

In the top photo are five T-33 Silver Stars and from left-to-right, they are:
Snowbirds support using set # 232,  Red Knight using set # 012,  Natural metal RCAF+3 using set # 010,  Golden Hawks support using set # 192,  Two-grey using set # 212.

In the lower photo are three CF-104 Starfighters and from left-to-right, they are:
Sym camo using set # 019,  Tiger Meet using set # 275,  Natural metal Sym using set # 017.

2009 will mark the 100th Anniversary of powered flight in Canada To commemorate this historic milestone, a specially painted F-86 Sabre will appear at airshows all across Canada along with the Canadian Forces Snowbirds and the 2009 demo CF-18 Hornet. This Sabre has been christened "Hawk One" (not to be confused with the CF-101 Voodoo that used the same nickname).

CanMilAir Decals became involved in the project back in early February 2008 when Jim Belliveau at CFB Cold Lake, Alberta, asked by if I could supply him with full-size vector artwork of the red and white Golden Hawk motif for the fuselage sides.  Meanwhile, over in Gatineau, Quebec, an F-86 Sabre belonging to Vintage Wings of Canada was readied for a flight to Cold Lake where it would be completely re-painted in Golden Hawk colours.

Once the F-86 Sabre leaves Gatineau for Alberta, Vintage Wings wanted a scale model built to put on display to illustrate to visitors, volunteers and staff what the Sabre will look like when it finally returns in early 2009. The model shown above was built by Wayne Giles of Ottawa Ontario. Wayne is a volunteer at VWoC and offered to build a 1:48 scale F-86 Sabre and obviously needed a set of decals. This set has not yet been placed into the CanMilAir catalogue, but will be made available soon.

The differences between this decal set and a standard Golden Hawk Sabre can be found on the tail and rear fuselage. The Red Ensign and full military serial has been replaced with a specially modified "Century of Flight" logo on either side of the fin with the civil registration in white on the red band under the tail.

2009 is going to be a tremendous airshow year ! !

CMAD # 061

David Campbell from Stanwick, England, built this Hawker Hurricane using the Sweet 1:144 scale kit. It depicts Douglas Bader's Hurricane on 7th September, 1940 and will be part of a larger diorama containing another Hurricane and a Bf-110. The underside is airbrushed Tamiya Sky and the upper surfaces are Humbrol spray can acrylics. Weathering was done with Tamiya Powders.

Excellent work, David!

CMAD # 318

This RCAF VC Era Lockheed Ventura was sent in by Massimo Santarossa of Calgary, Alberta. Massimo sent along the following comments:

"This kit is the 1:72 Minicraft Lockheed PV-1 Ventura.  It is built straight out of the box, with only some antenna wires being added.  I used your set #318 to complete an aircraft from 1 Air Armament School, and painted the model with various shades of Alclad II and Humbrol bright red and satin black.  The model was built for the 2008 Northern Wings model contest, which has as a special award the best Ventura model.

The kit has some nice qualities, such as fine recessed panel lines, but it shows its age (1987) as there are fit issues here and there.  Once put together it does look the part however.  Your decals went on without any troubles, settling into the panel lines nicely.  I admit I was a bit concerned about the opacity of the decals, especially on the wings where the roundel would cover both the red and natural metal.  I was bracing myself for the under colours to show through but the decals covered perfectly.  Well done Bill!"

Wonderful job, Massimo! I hope you place well in the contest!

CMAD # 133

This fine looking Piasecki H-21 "Flying Banana" was built by Doug Fuller of Huntsville, Ontario. Doug sent along the following comments:

"The model is a 1:48 H-21 by Fonderie Miniature. Paints are all Tamiya acrylics, custom mixed to get the right shade. Needed lots of work to turn it into a decent model.

I met you at the Model display this summer at CFB Borden. Keep up the great work!"

A very nice build, Doug! I hope to see you at Borden in 2009!

CMAD # 188

Andy Durtnall from Calgary, Alberta, sent in this photo of his 1:48 scale Accurate Miniatures Canadair CF-5A depicting the pedestal mounted gate guardian at the Museum of the Regiments in Calgary. Andy's comments are below.

"Hi William, please find the attached photo of my Accurate Miniatures CF-5. Some months ago, you were kind enough to mail me the first set of decals specifically depicting this aircraft after I had sent several photos to you. As promised, I said I’d send you a photo when complete. Hope you enjoy. The decals were great."

An absolutely stunning build, Andy!
Just to let everyone else know how closely this resembles the real one in Calgary, here is an image of it  PHOTO

CMAD # 029

From LCol Brian Darling (ret) comes this fine looking 1:144 scale Revell Germany 412 Sqn Canadair CC-144B Challenger 601. This particular Challenger wears the special 60th Anniversary of D-Day markings used in 2004. The "VZ-F" codes on the engine nacelles are in honour of  WW II 412 Sqn Spitfire pilot Charley Fox, DFC and Bar.

Charley, a veteran I had the pleasure of knowing personally, was the Honorary Colonel of 412 Sqn from 2004 until his passing in an automobile accident on October 18, 2008 at the age of 88.

Charley was probably best known locally as a tireless volunteer who spoke to schools and service groups about military service. In a broader sense, he was known for strafing German Field Marshall Erwin Rommel’s staff car in 1944, which affected Rommel’s ability to return to active duty, at a critical moment during the invasion of Normandy.

Lest We Forget.

CMAD # 237

This little beauty is a 1:144 scale hand carved McDonnell F2H-3 Banshee by Lou Vautour of Kingston, Nova Scotia. The markings are that of a "Banjo" from Royal Canadian Navy fighter squadron VF-871 circa 1962 with HMCS Bonaventure.

Lou's plans include carving seven more of these Banshees and placing them on the deck of his scratch-built 1:144 scale HMCS Bonaventure.

Bravo Zulu Lou!

     CMAD # 185

This 1:18 scale P-51 Mustang was finished by Al Petrie of Victoria, British Columbia. The following comments from Al were copied from the Aircraft Resource Center forum HERE for more photos and a bit more description.

"I had a guy who was in the RCAF 402 Squadron in the late 50s ask me to do a Mustang he worked on. He gave me the 1/18 scale "Flying Undertaker" P-51 in USAAF markings to start with. I sanded off the markings and repainted it with a Testors Metallic Silver spray paint can and applied CanMilAir decals.

I really cannot say enough good things about the decals from CanMilAir. He was really fast to get them to me, he did the specific number of aircraft I requested, and they settled down on metallic silver paint, which is a real bear to work with. Even after a topcoat of gloss spray, the carrier film barely was visible, and being as I was a bit rushed doing this, the carrier was left around the registry codes instead of trimming them back all the way. I was pleasantly surprised to see they worked out as nice as they did.

The "City of Winnipeg" logo on the cowling also went down perfectly. Frankly, I was terrified to apply a yellow decal over black, but he had it based over white decal, and as a result, there was no bleed through of the black. Absolutely fantastic!"

Thanks for the kudos, Al! And a darn nice job you did, too!
